On September 12, 2022

If you’re like most homeowners, your garage is one of the most-used rooms in your house. If you have a pitted garage floor, it can be tough to keep it looking clean and new. But don’t worry – there’s a solution.

You can take care of your garage flooring with new concrete flooring and keep it looking great for years. Read on to learn more about how to get this job done right.

What Causes Pitting in Garage Flooring?

Several factors cause pitting on garage floors, including:

  • Climatic conditions
  • Natural aging
  • Abuse or misuse

Pitting may also result from poor preparation of the final sub-base, inadequate mix, or poor use of an accelerator.

How to Repair Your Pitted Garage Floor

Regardless of the degree of pitting on your concrete floor, you can restore it with a special concrete resurfacing material. This material will bring your surface to finish specifications, leaving you with a flawlessly smooth garage floor.

Follow the steps below to restore your pitted concrete garage floor:

Cleaning

The first step to repairing your pitted concrete floor is cleaning. A new refinishing solution cannot bond properly to a dirty surface, mold, or other contaminants, so you should clean the pits properly to eliminate dirt, debris, and loose concrete particles.

Water alone may not deliver the best results. You can use a pressure washer and a concrete floor cleaning solution, cleaning small pits with a broom or scrub brush.

Preparation

It is critical to fix major floor imperfections before applying your new finish coat. Otherwise, large pits will still be visible after applying the concrete resurfacing product because the product will only fill the pits partially.

Therefore, ensure you fill any hole at least a quarter inch deep. You can use a dab of caulking or foam backer rod to fill single pits. If cracks exist, caulking or crack seal will do an excellent job filling them.

Consider putting tape on each side of the crack before filling it. You don’t want excess filler material to spread onto your concrete floor. Use a putty knife or trowel to smooth the filled spot.

Application

This process varies depending on the concrete resurfacing product you are using. Some resurfacing solutions require you to first apply a coat of primer, while other solutions require you to pre-soak your concrete surface with water.

Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results. Pour the resurfacing solution directly on your garage floor after mixing it, and use a metal trowel to apply the solution to a small surface.

A floor squeegee will be an excellent tool if you have a larger floor. Move the solution back and forth with the squeegee until you fill every pit on your floor.

Making many passes from various angles will ensure 100% filling. Having uniform coverage is critical for a smooth, finish coat.

Finishing

Concrete usually shrinks as it cures and dries. Check your new surface regularly to determine if it needs an additional coat. Garage floors typically need to be smooth after finishing.

As you work, you may need to even the surface with your squeegee or trowel. If you want to enhance your garage floor’s slip resistance, you can achieve that by gently pulling a push broom across the resurfacing solution’s surface before it dries.

This technique creates indented lines for a relatively rough surface. Once the resurfacing solution dries, apply your favorite finish material, such as epoxy paint.

Repairing pitting in concrete garage floor does not have to be a challenging task. With the right skills, equipment, and materials, you can quickly and efficiently restore your garage floor to like-new condition.
